Romanian Police Launch ETIAS Digital Border Control Project

The Romanian Police announced the start of the "Smart Adapt" project, aimed at digitising border controls in line with the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). The system will automatically record and verify data for third‑country nationals and enable electronic travel authorisations before arrival in the EU.

Under Law no. 300/2022, the police are designated as the authority with access to ETIAS information, which will be used to prevent and investigate crimes, combat illegal migration, terrorism and organised crime, and support international police cooperation. The project will enhance the operational capacity of the Organized Crime Combat Directorate with dedicated workstations for accessing ETIAS data. The total budget is 550,000 lei, of which 495,000 lei is non‑repayable EU funding and 55,000 lei is a national contribution, financed through the Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy and a contract with the Internal Business Management Authority's Directorate for Non‑Repayable External Funds of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
