Romanian Police Ramp Up Traffic Checks, Seize Hundreds of Licences

In June, Romanian police carried out a series of intensified road safety operations across the country. In Brașov County, two motorcyclists were arrested after tests showed blood‑alcohol levels of 0.34 mg/l and 0.61 mg/l; one was also driving an unregistered vehicle and without a proper licence. The Galaţi County police ran the European “Alcohol & Drugs” campaign from 15‑21 June, culminating in a 24‑hour “Marathon” on 19 June to target drunk and drug‑impaired driving.

Separate actions in Craiova recorded a 20‑year‑old rider travelling 167 km/h, leading to a 120‑day licence suspension, while Mureș County officers on DN15 issued 243 fines, mainly for speeding, and suspended several licences. A nationwide “Blocada” sweep reported over 600 licences seized, more than 11,500 contraventions and roughly 4,000 vehicle inspections in the previous 24 hours. In Constanța County, 26 licences were taken for extreme speeding, and a weekend roundup noted 52 drivers caught under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

These coordinated checks, involving thousands of officers and hundreds of roadside tests, aim to curb dangerous driving behaviours and improve overall road safety in Romania.
