President Nicușor Dan tackles suspension talk, backs Ukraine and urges domestic security measures

Romanian President Nicușor Dan dismissed proposals to suspend him as a “non‑serious” issue and warned that early elections would signal political immaturity amid the ongoing government formation crisis. He stressed that suspension should only follow grave constitutional violations.

During a visit to Kyiv, Dan condemned Russia’s “dangerous instrumentalisation of history,” reaffirmed Romania’s support for Ukraine’s internationally recognised borders and territorial integrity, and pledged long‑term security cooperation. He announced that his partner, Mirabela Grădinaru, will work with Olena Zelenska’s humanitarian foundation on projects in Romania and abroad.

Domestically, Dan marked the Ministry of Internal Affairs Day by emphasizing the fight against domestic violence and drug trafficking as national priorities. He also warned that Romania’s routine administrative procedures have hindered rapid adaptation to new security threats, citing recent drone incidents over Constanța and Galaţi and the need for NATO‑aligned capabilities.

In parallel political developments, PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu signalled a possible coalition with the AUR party, contingent on clarifications of its stance on sanctions against Russia and the war in Ukraine. Dan indicated he will await a parliamentary majority before appointing a new prime minister.
