Romania's president receives rival prime‑minister candidates amid coalition deadlock
President Nicușor Dan has called the leaders of the main parliamentary parties to new consultations at the Cotroceni Palace as Romania struggles to form a new government. The Social Democratic Party (PSD) backs Sorin Grindeanu for prime minister, while the liberal‑centrist bloc of PNL, USR and UDMR proposes europarliamentarian Siegfried Mureșan.
Negotiations have stalled over whether a minority PSD government or a right‑wing minority coalition (PNL‑USR‑UDMR) can secure a parliamentary majority. PSD accuses the liberal parties of inventing procedural hurdles and warns that continued blockage could jeopardise the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and the country's credit rating. USR deputy Claudiu Năsui estimates Grindeanu would need about ten more votes and Mureșan about thirty‑five to be confirmed.
The president has set a deadline before the parliamentary recess on 30 June, pressing parties to present a joint majority agreement. The outcome will determine the speed with which Romania can address urgent economic challenges and meet EU‑funded reform targets.
