Romanian President Nicușor Dan Criticised by Former President Traian Băsescu

Former Romanian president Traian Băsescu told Recorder that President Nicușor Dan has made several critical errors during the current political crisis. Băsescu said Dan’s refusal to consider early elections, his slow decision‑making on the premiership, and his failure to intervene before the opposition’s censure motion have weakened the government’s stability. He argued that, had he been in office, he would have quickly appointed a prime minister to force parliament to vote under the pressure of possible early elections, using the two‑and‑a‑half‑year window as leverage.

Băsescu also criticised Dan for not preventing the censure motion against Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and for relying on party negotiations instead of decisive constitutional tools. The former president suggested that Dan’s handling of the crisis could lead to further deadlock and warned that the president’s inaction “cannot serve the country.”
