EU and Ukraine seal joint drone production agreement

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Kyiv and, alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, announced a partnership to jointly produce combat drones and anti‑drone systems. The deal, dubbed the “Drone Deal,” aims to combine Ukraine’s battlefield experience with the EU’s industrial capacity, with Zelensky saying production could rise from 10 million to 20 million drones a year. The agreement also foresees joint development of ballistic‑missile defence systems by 2028 and is funded from the EU’s €90 billion support loan for Ukraine and additional defence‑programme money. The signing took place during the fifth Ukraine‑Southeast Europe summit, which brought leaders from Romania, Moldova, Croatia and other regional states. Romania’s President Nicușor Dan said his country is reviewing a NATO request to supply Patriot interceptors to Ukraine. The EU also approved the use of loan funds to buy Chinese drone components to cover shortfalls in European supply chains.
