Romanian President Nicușor Dan praises U.S. leadership in Newsmax editorial

Romanian President Nicușor Dan published an opinion piece in the U.S. conservative outlet Newsmax to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. In the editorial he said, “In Romania, popular support for American leadership and, in particular, for President Donald Trump remains very high,” and emphasized the historic and strategic partnership between the two countries, citing World War‑II anti‑communist aid, joint operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and ongoing cooperation on defense contracts, the Cernavodă nuclear project, an AI gigafactory in Dobrogea and the development of the Port of Constanța as a regional logistics hub.

Political analyst Ștefan Popescu argued that the piece serves as a lobbying effort by the Romanian presidency and underscores Romania’s reliance on the United States for “hard security,” noting the absence of a comparable European alternative and describing the editorial as a strategic move to keep Romania firmly within the U.S.–Poland‑Baltic security architecture.
