Romanian PSD MEPs support extension of PNRR implementation period

Members of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) delegation in the European Parliament voted in favour of an amendment calling on the European Commission to propose a legislative change that would extend the implementation deadline of the EU Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (PNRR) to 31 August 2028. The amendment also seeks an active role for the European Investment Bank in guaranteeing the continuity of projects that may need additional support after the new deadline.

The amendment was opposed by the National Liberal Party (PNL) MEPs and other members of the European People’s Party group, leading to its rejection. PSD representatives criticised the opposition, saying, “It is hard to understand how those who daily talk in Bucharest about saving every euro from the PNRR vote in Brussels against an initiative that supports the European Parliament’s position on extending the implementation period. Romania needs consistency, not a double standard.” The party argues that many PNRR‑funded investments are still under execution and that the current timetable risks leaving funds unspent.

The vote highlights a split within Romania’s ruling coalition over how to ensure full absorption of EU recovery funds and complete ongoing projects.
