Romanian Sea Drone Explosion Triggers NATO Security Meeting

A Russian sea drone exploded in Romanian Black Sea waters, causing a fire and minor injuries to two people when the wreck fell on a residential building in Galaţi. The incident prompted swift coordination between Romania, Bulgaria and Ukrainian authorities. Bulgarian President Iliana Yotov, speaking in Sofia, said the response was "lightning‑fast" and assured that there is no danger to Bulgarian citizens, praising the defence ministry’s cooperation with Romanian and Ukrainian services.

Romania convened an emergency security meeting in Constanţa, bringing together senior officials from the ministries of defence, interior, border control and intelligence to investigate the explosion, assess its impact on regional security and consider measures to strengthen maritime monitoring and rapid‑response capabilities. Ukrainian naval officials said the drone belonged to their forces and was disabled by Russian electronic warfare, leading to loss of navigation and the subsequent crash. NATO and the EU issued strong statements reaffirming their commitment to protect all NATO territory. A formal investigation has been opened by the Constanţa prosecutor's office.
