Romanian senators from the PSD and AUR introduced an amendment to the law on public integrity (ANI) that would strip any official found definitively incompatible or in a conflict of interest of their mandate within 30 days, even for cases decided before the law’s entry into force. The amendment is widely seen as targeting Timișoara mayor Dominic Fritz, who was declared incompatible by the ANI in June 2022. Fritz, USR and other opposition parties argue the provision is unconstitutional because it applies retroactively and would set a dangerous precedent. They warn it could jeopardise roughly €770 million of EU‑funded PNRR projects linked to the law. USR filed a criminal complaint alleging the amendment was inserted into the committee report without any discussion or vote. Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan also warned that the change threatens European funds and the rule of law. The amendment is scheduled for a final plenary vote in the Senate at 16:00, with opponents saying they will challenge it before the Constitutional Court.
