Romanian Senate tacitly adopts bill limiting pension and salary accumulation
The Romanian Senate has tacitly adopted a government-initiated bill that restricts the ability of certain retirees to simultaneously collect a full pension and a state salary. Under the proposed rules, beneficiaries of service or military pensions who choose to continue working within public institutions must accept an 85% reduction in their pension amount for the duration of their employment.
The measure aims to prevent individuals from receiving two full incomes funded by public money. While the reduction applies to those working in the public sector, it does not affect retirees who choose to work in the private sector. Government officials have estimated that at least 15,000 employees are currently in such situations.
The bill passed the Senate after the deadline for debate and voting expired, meaning it moves automatically to the Chamber of Deputies, which serves as the decisive forum. The legislation also includes provisions for public officials to request continued activity up to the age of 70, subject to institutional approval.
