Romanian summer traffic fines rise as new penalty point values take effect in 2026

During the summer travel season, the number of vehicles on Romanian highways and tourist routes increases, leading to a surge in traffic violations. The most common offences are using a mobile phone while driving, exceeding speed limits, and stopping or parking on the emergency lane, each carrying fines that can reach several thousand lei and may result in licence suspension.

From 1 July 2026 the value of a penalty point will be calculated as 5 % of the minimum gross salary, raising the point‑fine from 202.5 lei to 216.25 lei. This change will make all traffic sanctions more costly for drivers. Police patrols are stepping up checks in the summer to curb these infractions, which are among the leading causes of accidents.

The new system aims to increase compliance with road‑traffic rules and reduce dangerous behaviour during the busy holiday period.
