Romania sole EU member with month‑on‑month diesel price rise in May 2026
Eurostat data show that fuel and lubricant prices for personal transport rose 20.7 % across the EU in May 2026 compared with May 2025. Diesel prices were up 29 % year‑on‑year, while gasoline rose 16.2 %. Despite a 5.8 % month‑on‑month decline in diesel prices across most member states, Romania was the only country where diesel increased, climbing 1.6 % from April to May. Romania’s diesel price reached 9.03‑9.09 lei per litre, and gasoline jumped 6.2 % month‑on‑month, one of the steepest rises in the bloc. Four EU states recorded year‑on‑year fuel price hikes above 30 %: Bulgaria (33.9 %), Luxembourg (32.2 %), Lithuania (30.8 %) and Romania (30.4 %). Hungary saw the smallest annual increase at 3.5 %. The largest month‑on‑month diesel declines were in Germany (‑11.9 %), Greece (‑8.5 %), Estonia (‑8.4 %) and Ireland (‑8.1 %). At the same time, gasoline prices rose in 23 EU countries, with Italy posting the highest monthly gain (6.9 %).
