Bears spotted near homes in Argeș and Jibou, Romania
In mid‑June 2026, the Argeș fire‑and‑rescue inspectorate recorded multiple bear encounters in the towns of Topoloveni and the villages of Lerești and Micești. Teams from the local emergency services, together with other agencies, were mobilised and alerts were sent through the RO‑ALERT system. The animal approached heavily trafficked areas, including near a high‑school and a cultural centre, and three people were injured. The bear, which had previously been struck by a vehicle, was being pursued for removal.
Separately, authorities in Jibou, north‑west Romania, reported at least four bears in the surrounding area. The town’s vice‑mayor, Vlad Pașcalău, called on residents to avoid approaching the animals, to refrain from feeding them, and to report sightings immediately to the emergency number 112. Officials also warned locals to secure food waste to prevent attracting bears.
Both incidents prompted public safety warnings and heightened monitoring by emergency and wildlife agencies.
