Romanian towns Găești and Ploiești approve projects and clash over cultural partnership rules

Mayor Alexandru Iorga of Găești announced that the local council voted on a wide range of development measures. Approved initiatives include a ban on gambling establishments, extension of utility networks for a health‑specialist block, organization of the “Zilele Orașului Găești 2026” event, creation of a home‑care unit for the elderly, a multiyear program to rehabilitate basements and civil‑protection shelters, extension of the General Urban Plan, updates to technical‑economic indicators for street modernisation under the “Anghel Saligny” programme, budget rectification, reorganisation of the mayor’s office, stray‑dog management measures and an education‑excellence gala. The only proposal that failed to obtain enough votes was a change to tariffs for street‑cleaning services.

In Ploiești, Mayor Mihai Polițeanu accused PSD councilors of moving to block cultural events by introducing a draft resolution that would require the city council’s approval for any public‑private partnership or sponsorship related to cultural activities, including the “Republica de sub Castani”. Polițeanu described the measure as “a new gimmick” that could delay or halt events, while PSD officials say it aims to increase transparency of municipal agreements.

Both stories illustrate local Romanian authorities addressing development priorities and debating the extent of political oversight over cultural collaborations.
