Romanian Transport Ministry tackles fraud alerts, toll reforms, and railway budget cuts

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI) issued a public warning that recent SMS messages claiming to be from the ministry and demanding payment for traffic fines are fraudulent. The alerts advise citizens not to click links, noting that MTI never sends payment requests by text.

MTI also published a draft ordinance setting new rovinieta (road‑use) fees for 2026, with charges varying by vehicle emission class. Effective from 1 July, daily, monthly and yearly rates increase for Euro III and lower‑emitting vehicles, while electric and Euro VI cars retain the lowest tariffs.

Interim transport minister Radu Miruță rejected the revenue‑and‑expenditure budgets for state railway companies CFR Călători and CFR SA, arguing the proposals recorded unrealistically high losses and debt. He called for revised budgets based on realistic cost‑reduction plans.

Separately, the Bucharest City Council approved a pilot taxi service for people with disabilities, to be implemented within the next four months under the direction of the General Directorate of Social Assistance. The initiative aims to provide accessible, tariff‑standard transport for wheelchair users, marking the city’s first dedicated disabled‑taxi service.
