Romanian travelers flock to Spain for August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will occur on 12 August 2026, with the path of totality crossing the north of Spain and a small part of northeast Portugal. Outside the narrow band, observers in western Romania will see a partial eclipse, with up to about 33 % of the Sun covered between 20:18 and 20:52 local time.

Romanian astronomy enthusiasts are planning trips to the Spanish totality zone. About 65 Romanians have already booked travel, spending roughly €800 each for accommodation in regions such as Madrid, Salamanca, Zaragoza and nearby towns. Hotels in these areas are nearly fully booked. Participants aim to use certified solar filters and specialised equipment to safely observe the brief darkness, during which stars become visible and the solar corona can be seen.

For those staying in Romania, the best viewing locations are western cities close to the border, such as Arad, Timișoara, Oradea, Satu Mare, Carei and Salonta, where the partial eclipse will be the most pronounced.
