Romanian veterinary authorities impose control zones for small‑ruminant plague and rabies outbreaks

The Veterinary and Food Safety Authority in Timiș County confirmed an outbreak of small‑ruminant plague (Peste micilor rumegătoare) at a sheep farm in Giulvăz. A special commission approved protection and surveillance zones of 0‑5 km and 0‑20 km around the site, ordering immediate culling, incineration of carcasses, movement bans for ovine and caprine animals, a census of local farms, and a 33‑day enforcement period after final disinfection.

In Bacău County, the same authority reported several rabies foci affecting domestic and wild animals, including two bovine cases, a cat, and two foxes. Officials urged owners to vaccinate dogs and cats, intensified clinical and epidemiological monitoring, launched oral vaccination campaigns for foxes, and imposed movement restrictions on animals in the affected zones. Both regions maintain sanitary‑veterinary controls until observation periods end and all measures are fulfilled.
