Romania's A1 highway Margina-Holdea section hits 60% progress

The National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) announced that physical work on the 9.13‑kilometre Margina‑Holdea stretch of the A1 Lugoj‑Deva highway has reached 60% completion. Director General Cristian Pistol said the Romanian‑Bosnian contractor consortium UMB Spedition – EuroAsflat is simultaneously advancing tunnel galleries, structures and embankments.

Tunnel 1 (galleries of 415 m and 367.5 m) has completed excavation, shotcrete and inverted‑arch foundations, while work now focuses on secondary lining, waterproofing and side drains. Tunnel 2 (galleries of 1,985 m and 1,825 m) has excavated 986 m of the second gallery and 1,163 m of the first. Foundations for two viaducts and two overpasses are finished, and about 90% of the sub‑base work for the embankments is done. The projects employ the Austrian NATM tunnelling method, also used on other Romanian motorways.

The contract is valued at 1.82 billion lei (excluding VAT) and is financed through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Completion is scheduled for 2026, after which uninterrupted traffic will be possible on more than 360 km of the A1, linking Boiţa in Sibiu County to Nădlac at the western border.
