Romania's A1 Mountain Highway Section Nears Summer Opening

Romania is close to opening the first motorway segment that crosses the Carpathian Mountains. The 9.86‑km stretch of the A1 from Curtea de Argeș to Tigveni, built by Austrian contractor Porr, is slated for completion by the end of August. The works include earth‑works, ballast foundations, asphalt mixes, metal guardrails on 12 bridges and viaducts, lighting, intelligent‑transport systems, and the 1,350‑metre Momaia tunnel equipped with modern safety installations such as smoke‑ and gas‑detection, evacuation systems and traffic‑monitoring cameras.

If the current pace continues, the section could open six months ahead of the contractual deadline in February 2027, allowing traffic on about 54 km of the 122‑km Sibiu‑Pitești motorway. The contract is valued at 1.678 billion lei, funded through the Transport 2021‑2027 programme.
