Romanian police crackdown on road violations amid a spate of accidents
A series of serious road incidents and intensified police traffic controls marked the last week across Romania. On the Pitești‑Craiova Express (DEx12) a collision between a car and a broken‑down utility vehicle left two men hospitalized. In Argeș, an 83‑year‑old was rescued after becoming trapped under a motocultor. A child of three was among the injured in a Neamț crash, while Suceava recorded three fatal accidents in a single weekend.
Police operations were conducted in numerous counties. Olt authorities issued 488 fines totalling over 230,000 lei and seized 38 licences. In Braila, an anti‑bicycle‑discipline action resulted in 65 fines of more than 11,600 lei. Sighetu Marmaţiei/Maramureş saw 125 vehicles checked, 81 fines and two licence suspensions. Similar sweeps in Sibiu, Hunedoara, Caraș‑Severin, Brașov, Lugoj and Târgu‑Jiu led to dozens of penalties, licence withdrawals and vehicle registration suspensions. Notable incidents included a 77‑year‑old driver caught driving the wrong way on the A7 motorway (120‑day licence suspension) and a 77‑year‑old in Satu Mare arrested for breaching a protection order, driving without a licence and refusing a breath test.
Weather also affected traffic: fog reduced visibility to under 50 m in six counties, prompting police warnings for reduced speed and increased caution on major highways.
