Romania pushes forward with railway electrification and multiple highway projects

Romanian transport authorities reported significant progress on several major infrastructure works in 2026. The Cluj‑Napoca – Oradea railway electrification and rehabilitation reached 70 % completion on Lot 1 and 72 % on Lot 2, targeting modern signalling and higher speeds. On the road network, the first 24 km of the A8 "Autostrada Unirii" between Târgu Mureș and Miercurea Nirajului is about 50 % finished, with opening of the initial segment expected in early 2027. The A3 "Transilvania" motorway’s Nădășelu‑Mihăiești section advanced to 68 % physical work, with viaducts nearing final girders. The A7 segment between Săbăoani and Pașcani faces possible delay to 2027 due to technical complexities, while a 16 km bypass of Bacău will be closed from mid‑July to end‑August for connection works. Additionally, the Chiribiș‑Biharia lot of the A3 reached 60 % progress. These projects, financed largely by EU recovery funds, aim to improve regional connectivity, reduce travel times and boost economic activity across north‑west and central Romania.
