Romania's AUR launches suspension process against President Nicușor Dan

The Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) announced that its National Council, attended by all 135 members, voted unanimously to start the constitutional procedure to suspend President Nicușor Dan and to begin preparations for early parliamentary elections. The party cited the president’s “exclusion of a significant part of Romanians from decision‑making” and his refusal to nominate a second prime‑ministerial candidate as justification. AUR also declared that its deputies will not participate in any vote on a government proposed by Dan.

AUR leader George Simion posted on Facebook that the party is “starting the process to suspend Nicușor Dan” and urged the president to name a prime minister within the constitutional deadline. The suspension can only proceed if a parliamentary majority approves it, followed by a national referendum on dismissal—requirements that AUR does not meet, as it lacks the necessary parliamentary seats. The move is seen as a political strategy aimed at forcing early elections and increasing AUR’s influence amid the current governmental crisis.
