Romania grants €380 million railway upgrade to TERNA consortium

Romania’s national railway company CFR signed a contract in Bucharest with the TrackWorks consortium, in which GEK TERNA holds a 74% stake alongside Alstom Romania. The agreement is valued at €380 million (about 1.8 billion lei) and covers the design and full rehabilitation of the 44‑km Filiași‑Igiroasa section (Lot 2) of the Craiova–Drobeta‑Turnu‑Severin–Caransebeș railway corridor. Earlier in March the same consortium signed a €410 million contract for Lot 1 (Craiova–Filiași), together forming an 83‑km upgrade corridor.

The four‑year project aims to increase operating speeds to 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight, and to accommodate freight trains up to 740 m long. Funding comes from non‑repayable EU transport programme resources (2021‑2027) and national budgets. The works will modernise signalling, electrification and install European Train Control System (ERTMS) Level 2, bringing the line to European interoperability standards.
