Romania's College of Physicians demands new medical profession law and better resident doctor conditions

President Catalina Poiana of the Romanian College of Physicians presented the results of a study of medical residents. About 46% say they receive no day off after a night guard, 81.7% lack uniform insurance and 22% lack protective equipment. Nearly 90% want payment for first‑year guards, 86.3% call for a limit on monthly guard hours, and 85.9% seek the possibility of external rotations without breaking their contracts. The study also highlighted that 40.9% of residents hold a second job, over 70% suffer chronic sleep deficits, and 43.2% report almost no free time.

Poiana reiterated the need for a new law on the medical profession to modernise the College, clarify its role and give residents professional respect, clear training conditions, mentors and adequate infrastructure. She warned that ignoring demands to amend the Salary Law would severely affect the guard system for medical personnel. In a related incident, police are investigating the death of a 32‑year‑old resident doctor found unconscious in a Bucharest hospital restroom.
