Romania's highest‑paying sectors and biggest banks reported for 2025‑2026

Data from the National Institute of Statistics show that the oil and gas extraction sector has become Romania's top‑earning field in 2026, with an average net monthly salary exceeding 15,400 lei, overtaking the IT sector, which now ranks second with an average of 14,249 lei, up 8.6% year‑on‑year. Other notable changes include management and consultancy entering the top six with salaries around 11,600 lei, while the tobacco industry climbs to fifth place and energy production drops out of the top ten.

In the banking sector, the 2025 rankings remain dominated by Banca Transilvania, which posted assets of 210.4 billion lei and a 22% market share after acquiring OTP Bank. BCR holds the second position with assets of about 132.2 billion lei and a 13.8% share, while state‑controlled CEC Bank ranks third with 107.6 million lei in assets and an 11.2% share. The top five banks together account for roughly 68% of the Romanian banking system's total assets, reflecting continued consolidation through mergers and acquisitions such as UniCredit's merger with Alpha Bank Romania and Intesa Sanpaolo's takeover of First Bank.
