Romania's National Liberal Party to hold extraordinary congress on Sunday
The National Council of Romania's National Liberal Party (PNL) met on Friday and decided to convene an extraordinary congress on Sunday at 12:00 in the Romexpo exhibition centre. About 2,500 delegates – including 500 ex‑officio members and 2,000 elected representatives – are expected to attend. The congress agenda includes amendments to the party statute, notably reducing the number of first‑vice‑president posts from four to one.
The meeting follows a leadership dispute after prime‑minister‑designate Adrian Vestea refused to resign. PNL leader Ilie Bolojan called for clarity and direction, while the party moved to suspend members who would support Vestea’s government. Legal challenges to party sanctions have been filed, with the Ilfov Tribunal briefly suspending previous decisions. Vestea has announced he will run for the party chairmanship at the congress.
