Romania's new‑car registrations surge 53% in June 2026

New‑car registrations in Romania jumped 52.9% in June 2026, reaching 16,008 units and returning the domestic market to a modest overall gain of 0.3% for the first half of the year. The total of new cars registered from January to June 2026 rose to 64,850, a 0.8% increase over the same period in 2025.

Electric vehicles led the growth, with 5,522 fully electric registrations—a 72.5% rise year‑on‑year—and a striking 352% jump in overall electric‑car registrations, bringing a new record for the segment. Hybrid models grew 17.5%, while conventional gasoline, diesel and LPG cars all fell sharply. Tesla entered Romania's top‑10 new‑car brands for the first time, recording 658 units in June.

Second‑hand car registrations fell, with June 2026 seeing 27,341 first‑time registrations, down 15.1% from June 2025, and a 11.6% decline in the six‑month total.
