Romania faces pension cuts and legal challenges as benefit reforms spark protests

In Gorj County, unions representing retirees, miners and energy workers are organising legal actions against county pension houses to recover withheld contributions and enforce court‑recognised rights. The campaign, coordinated by the National Federation of Labour and several trade unions, will hold meetings in Târgu Jiu, Motru and Plopșoru on 2 July.

National data show the average Romanian pension fell 0.8 % in the first quarter of 2026, reaching 2,934 lei, while the number of balneotherapy tickets was cut by over 15,000 places. The Argeș County Pension Office allocated only 57 treatment tickets for the 16‑20 July period, with beneficiaries required to contribute 50 % of the ticket value.

For July, pension payments made by bank transfer will be advanced to 10 July because the usual 12 July date falls on a Sunday, benefiting about 2.5 million pensioners. Pensions paid through the national post office will follow the standard 1‑15 July schedule. The companion allowance for disability pensioners rises by 138 lei to 2,163 lei per month.

A guide to the 2026 pension formula explains that a monthly pension of 4,000 lei requires roughly 49.4 pension points, which translates to an average gross salary of about 11,300 lei over a career of 35 years, or lower if the career is longer.
