Romania's PNRR deadlock fuels political criticism

The Civil Society Platform (CTP) alleges that major parties – PSD, AUR, the Thuma faction of the PNL and UDMR – are deliberately blocking milestones of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) because the required reforms would threaten their political interests. CTP warns that failure to meet the PNRR targets could cost Romania €770 million, push the country toward a junk‑rating, and trigger severe economic and social consequences.

Former ANPC chief Cristian Popescu Piedone, speaking from a vacation in Portugal, echoed the criticism, describing the current government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan as responsible for a “failed state” and urging the end of false promises to Romanians. Both commentaries highlight growing concern over the implementation of the PNRR and the political dynamics surrounding it.
