Romania's President Dan seeks new premier after Veștea loses confidence vote

Designated Prime Minister Adrian Veștea failed to secure a confidence vote in Romania's Parliament, receiving 189 votes against the 233 needed. President Nicușor Dan must now propose a third candidate to form a government capable of addressing the country's political instability and preserving access to European funds.

The failed mandate follows the collapse of the previous liberal-led cabinet and a fragmented parliament where the far‑right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) opposed Veștea. Analysts warn that prolonged deadlock could jeopardise EU financing and Romania's credit rating, while discussions focus on the likelihood of a minority government formed by left‑wing parties or a centre‑right coalition.
