Romania's Prime Minister Bolojan Announces Over 48% Cut in Chancellery Spending
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said the Prime Minister’s Chancellery will cut its budget by more than 48% in 2026 compared with 2024, projecting expenses of 21.62 million lei versus 42.09 million lei the previous year. The reductions affect salaries and contributions (down 34%), transport (down 87.6%), protocol (down 52.2%), translation services (down over 83%) and other allowances.
Bolojan highlighted that the savings, estimated at over 20 million lei (about €4 million), could have financed large infrastructure projects such as bridges and overpasses, noting that a single‑lane bridge over the Crișul Repede costs roughly that amount. He argued that cutting waste in the Chancellery demonstrates that public funds can be managed more efficiently and could free resources for essential public works.
