Romania's PSD moves toward coalition with UDMR to end government deadlock

The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) announced it is open to any political configuration that can end the current governmental stalemate, including backing a cabinet led by the Social Democratic Party (PSD). UDMR vice‑premier interim Tanczos Barna said formal negotiations are expected to intensify in the last week of August, stressing the need for a full‑powers government to resume suspended legislative activity.

Sources close to PSD say the party is drafting a coalition that would combine UDMR, national minority representatives, and parliamentarians from minor parties such as PÎR and UPR, as well as dissenting members of the National Liberal Party (PNL). The aim is to secure a majority of about 240 votes and present a new government by early September. Potential prime‑minister candidates include former premier Sorin Grindeanu or an independent figure such as Alexandru Nazare. The proposed cabinet would avoid further pension and salary freezes, opting for modest indexation below inflation and other fiscal measures to address budgetary pressures ahead of the 2028 elections.
