Romanian PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu pushes for new minority government amid USR opposition
PSD president Sorin Grindeanu announced that “se fac primii pași pentru un nou Guvern” and claimed a government could be formed without USR’s help. He said negotiations have set out general principles linked to macro‑economic targets, the PNRR, OECD and SAFE, and that talks with leaders of PNL, USR and UDMR are ongoing. USR president Dominic Fritz responded that “USR nu va vota un guvern monocolor PSD”, proposing instead a reciprocal arrangement: USR would back a PNL‑USR‑UDMR minority cabinet now if PSD supports a PSD‑led government in the next parliamentary term. Fritz framed this as “principiul reciprocității”. Meetings at Villa Lac involving Grindeanu, Ilie Bolojan, Fritz and Kelemen Hunor ended without agreement, and President Nicușor Dan urged a rapid resolution before the parliamentary recess. The political crisis continues as both sides maintain firm positions, with PSD insisting on a minority cabinet led by Grindeanu and USR refusing to become “scala” for a PSD‑only government.
