Romania's solar and wind capacity overtakes hydro power

By early July, Romania's combined installed solar and wind capacity reached more than 7,000 MW, surpassing the 6,689 MW installed by state hydro producer Hidroelectrica. Solar parks alone reached 3,841 MW, a rise of 747 MW since the start of the year and 1,414 MW compared with July 2025. Wind capacity contributed the balance to push total renewable output above hydro.

Energy storage also grew, hitting 878 MW in July – almost double the level at the start of the year and 3.6 times the July 2025 figure. Coal‑fired generation is being phased out slowly, while the expanding green mix is expected to ease electricity bills and support the broader economy.
