Italy hospitality sector faces closures and regulatory crackdowns
Italy is facing a significant decline in its traditional bar and café sector. According to data analyzed by the business association Confesercenti, the industry lost over 24,000 businesses between 2019 and 2025, averaging eleven closures per day. Rome has been particularly hard hit, losing more than 3,000 establishments, a decrease of over 30 percent.
In addition to the industry-wide decline, regulatory crackdowns and pricing controversies are affecting the sector. In Rome's Trastevere district, police and health officials closed two well-known restaurants, Nannarella and Cencio La Parolaccia, following inspections that revealed pests, illegal labor, and safety violations. One establishment faced a fine of up to 90,000 euros.
Furthermore, reports of excessive pricing in historic locations have surfaced. In Rome, customers reported being charged over 35 euros for two coffees and a slice of cake at a traditional venue, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding the credibility of local hospitality services.
