Spin Time: Rome implements emergency housing after building fire
Following a fire at the Spin Time building in Rome in late July 2026, approximately 400 residents, including 90 children, were left homeless. The building, located in via Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, has been placed under judicial seizure and declared uninhabitable.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri has signed an ordinance to provide emergency housing for up to 60 days, utilizing both secular and religious facilities within the city and metropolitan area. To assist the displaced, the municipality is opening a reception desk near the building to coordinate transfers and support families, with priority given to children and vulnerable individuals. Eligible families may eventually be assigned municipal public housing.
Negotiations for a temporary agreement to allow residents to return once the building is secured have failed after the property owner, Investire Sgr, rejected the municipality's proposal. Consequently, the City of Rome intends to pursue the acquisition of the building through the Agenzia delle Entrate.
Cardinal Baldo Reina, the Vicar of Rome, has criticized the situation, stating it would be wrong to resolve the matter solely through eviction and emphasizing the need to protect the community's social fabric and human dignity.
