Rome implements crackdown on tourist golf carts

Rome authorities are implementing a crackdown on the growing number of golf carts used for tourist tours in the city’s historic center. The vehicles have become increasingly popular, but their rapid expansion has outpaced existing regulations.

Critics argue that the golf carts contribute to worsening traffic congestion, illegal parking, and heightened levels of overtourism. Some local media outlets have described the situation as an “invasion” that leaves the city “held hostage by golf carts.”

Conversely, advocates for the industry suggest that the carts are a more sustainable option than traditional tourist vans or buses. They note that the vehicles are silent, occupy less road space, and do not produce exhaust that could damage historic monuments.
