Rome disability permit regulation enforcement

Overview

Rome authorities have launched a crackdown on the misuse of disability parking permits within the city’s Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL). Mobility Assessor Eugenio Patanè reported that nearly 20,000 permits belonging to deceased individuals were canceled and referred for legal action.

New regulations have also reduced the number of vehicle license plates allowed per permit from three to two, resulting in the removal of approximately 37,700 vehicle-permit pairings. Under these rules, a permit is only valid if the person with a disability is physically present in the vehicle. To monitor compliance, the city is preparing to deploy electronic gates at ZTL exits to cross-reference access data and identify irregular usage patterns.
