Rfi fined 1.75 million euros for Rome Termini rail disruption

The Italian Transport Authority has imposed a 1.75 million euro fine on Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Rfi) following a major rail traffic shutdown at Rome Termini on October 2, 2024. The disruption, reportedly caused by a nail, paralyzed rail services across the country. The Authority cited negligence in infrastructure maintenance and management, stating the company failed to ensure functionality and accessibility. Rfi has acknowledged the decision but maintains that the incident was caused by an external contractor performing night works and was an infrastructure failure that was promptly managed.

In separate infrastructure developments, Roma Capitale has approved nearly 29 million euros for the renewal of Rome's metro network. This includes approximately 17.8 million euros for Metro A to replace 48 escalators and 17 elevators, though a second phase for remaining equipment awaits further funding. Additionally, 11 million euros are allocated for technological upgrades and safety systems on Metro C.

In Molise, the STEP (Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform) initiative has launched with over 43.8 million euros in funding to support regional businesses in deep tech, biotechnology, and green transitions, including sectors like artificial intelligence and renewable energy.
