Rome neighbourhood and Italy’s freight sector discuss railway projects

On 9 July, Rome’s municipal authorities and RFI held the first online update on the Vallo Ferroviario del Pigneto construction. The Pigneto‑Prenestino neighbourhood committee praised the initiative but urged that future sessions be conducted in‑person within the district, with greater notice, to better track dust, noise, work hours, cleaning, parking and compensation measures. An information totem is slated for activation on 13 July to provide real‑time data on the works.

The same day, the fourth “Fermerci Incontra” conference was hosted at Ferrovie dello Stato’s auditorium, gathering the Ministry of Infrastructure, the rail regulator and industry leaders. Delegates highlighted an expected 8 % decline in freight traffic by 2025 and demanded renewed funding for incentives such as Ferrobonus, Norma Merci and ERTMS subsidies, faster payment processes and compensation for costs incurred during network upgrades. The association warned that insufficient support could leave a modernised rail network with a reduced freight sector, harming Italy’s logistics, industrial and environmental objectives.
