Overview

Italian infrastructure development is progressing through major railway projects in Rome and the Salerno–Reggio Calabria corridor.

In Rome, construction is underway for the new €230 million Pigneto station. Partially funded by PNRR resources, this project intends to create an interchange hub connecting the FL1 and FL3 regional lines with Metro C, with an expected annual capacity of 8 million passengers and an operational start date between late 2026 and early 2027. In August 2026, Lega leader Matteo Salvini inspected the Pigneto construction site.

In the south, the high-speed/high-capacity Salerno–Reggio Calabria line has reached significant milestones. Within the Battipaglia–Romagnano section, the Tunnel Boring Machine Leucosia finished excavating the 800-meter Serra Lunga tunnel, while the TBM Mireille has begun work on the 2.5-kilometer Sicignano tunnel. This €2.9 billion project, managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and executed by the Xenia Consortium, serves as a key component of the European TEN-T Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor.

Additionally, the mayors of Reggio Calabria and Messina have initiated a new institutional partnership aimed at promoting shared development and connectivity across the Strait.
