Rome residents face housing uncertainty after SpinTime building evacuation

Following a fire on July 29 at the SpinTime building in Rome's Esquilino district, approximately 400 residents were evacuated. While the building was placed under seizure by police, preventing former occupants from returning, all 127 families have since been provided with temporary housing.

In response to the displacement, the Polo Civico Esquilino has launched 'Casa Esquilino,' a structured community initiative involving 56 associations. Supported by Roma Capitale, the project aims to manage the housing emergency while maintaining local social ties. The initiative utilizes a system of shared hospitality, supported by a solidarity fund from the municipality, to allow families to remain near their schools and essential services.

Despite the temporary accommodations, uncertainty remains regarding the long-term future of the residents and the building. The property owner, Investire Sgr, has rejected an offer from the municipality to purchase the building. Activists emphasize that the SpinTime model of urban regeneration and social housing cannot be easily replicated elsewhere.
