Rome suspends all tram lines for infrastructure maintenance

All six tram lines in Rome—lines 2, 3, 5, 8, 14, and 19—have been suspended and replaced by buses due to extensive network maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. The service reorganization began on August 3, 2026.

The works are intended to prepare the network for the introduction of new Caf Urbos trams, which will gradually replace older vehicles. Key projects include upgrading the Nomentana electrical substation, replacing sections of the tram tracks, and various works across different city sectors. Additional construction projects, such as those on Via Prenestina and Viale dello Scalo San Lorenzo, along with the construction of a new tram terminus at Viale delle Milizie to accommodate Metro C construction, are also impacting the network.

According to Atac, the return of tram services will be gradual, with full reactivation expected between September 7 and November 23, 2026. During this period, commuters will face changes to routes, stops, and termini, particularly in the Termini area.
