Rome public transportation infrastructure upgrades
Overview
Rome is undergoing several infrastructure upgrades to its public transportation network. In August 2026, all six tram lines were suspended and replaced by bus services to facilitate extensive maintenance and prepare for the introduction of new Caf Urbos trams. These works include upgrading electrical substations, replacing track sections, and constructing a new terminus at Viale delle Milizie.
Simultaneously, the city is implementing the ‘Roma5G’ plan, a €97.7 million investment to improve digital connectivity. This project aims to eliminate digital blackouts in the subway system, specifically targeting the Metro C line with 5G coverage through a Distributed Antenna System. The initiative also involves laying over 250 kilometers of new fiber optic cables along lines A, B, and B1 to support passenger connectivity and urban surveillance systems.
