Campania issues yellow storm alert amid rising heat warnings
The Regional Civil Protection of Campania issued a yellow meteorological alert that is in force from 14:00 on 26 July until 10:00 on 27 July for the whole region. The alert warns of sudden rain showers, thunderstorms, hail, strong wind gusts, lightning and the associated risk of flash flooding, landslides, damage to roofs and exposed structures. It also highlights hydro‑geological dangers such as river‑level rise, floods, soil erosion and landslides.
The Ministry of Health simultaneously placed Naples and the surrounding Campania area under a yellow heat alert, extending the warning to twenty cities including Napoli. Health authorities advise avoiding sun exposure during the hottest hours, staying well hydrated and limiting outdoor physical effort, especially for the elderly, children and people with chronic illnesses.
Meteorological forecasts anticipate a change in conditions with the arrival of cooler, unstable air masses that will generate thunderstorms, heavy rain, lightning, wind gusts and possible localized hail in the Nolano and Bassa Irpinia zones. The municipalities most likely to be affected are Nola, Cimitile, Camposano, Cicciano, Tufino, Saviano, Comiziano, Avella, Baiano, Sperone and Mugnano del Cardinale.
Authorities are urged to activate structural and non‑structural measures to prevent and mitigate damage, and to monitor the stability of public green spaces, bridges and other exposed structures. The alert was disseminated by the regional Civil Protection functional centre and the Unified Operational Room (SORU).
