Rompetrol implements energy optimization at Petromidia refineries

KMG International, through Rompetrol, has launched an energy consumption optimization program at its Petromidia and Vega refineries. This initiative follows pressures on the Romanian National Energy System (SEN) and the Dobrogea grid, particularly after the shutdown of a reactor at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant.

The measures, implemented in stages starting August 5, aim to reduce consumption by approximately 5 MW during peak periods. Strategies include optimizing operational schedules, shifting certain activities outside critical hours, and adjusting auxiliary consumption without impacting technological processes. For instance, petroleum coke cutting at Petromidia is now scheduled outside the 19:00–23:00 window, reducing the electrical load by about 2.2 MW.

Additionally, a planned shutdown of the Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) unit starting August 22 is expected to reduce energy consumption by approximately 8 MW. Rompetrol has also implemented optimization measures for its electric vehicle charging stations, recommending charging outside the peak 19:00–22:00 interval.
