Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman backs team but flags injury doubts ahead of 2026 World Cup

Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman said his side possesses the quality to beat any opponent at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even though they are not among the pre‑tournament favourites. The Dutch open Group F against Japan and will later meet Sweden and Tunisia, with Argentina, France and Spain listed as the frontrunners.

Koeman warned that defender Jurrien Timber’s groin problem makes his World Cup participation uncertain, stating “It does not look rosy”. He also hopes striker Memphis Depay recovers from a recent thigh injury, while other players such as Matthijs de Ligt, Jerdy Schouten and Xavi Simons are already out.

The coach also addressed criticism over the omission of PSV midfielder Joey Veerman from the provisional squad, explaining that he prefers clear choices for the players he has selected and believes he knows the “meat” he has in the squad.
