Maxaranguape mayor and vice removed after court upholds cassation, new election to be held
The Regional Electoral Court of Rio Grande do Norte (TRE‑RN) unanimously upheld the cassation of Maxaranguape’s mayor, Maria Erenir Freitas de Lima (known as Professora Nira, PSD), and vice‑mayor Evanio Pedro do Nascimento (Solidariedade). The court rejected the embargos of declaration filed by the duo, confirming the earlier ruling that found them guilty of abuse of political and economic power by distributing construction materials to vulnerable voters during the 2024 municipal election.
As a result, both officials must vacate their posts and a supplementary municipal election will be organized. Councilwoman Daya Sobrinho (PSD), president of the municipal chamber, will assume the mayoralty on an interim basis until the new election is held. The decision also annulled the mandate of substitute councilor Ronialdo Câmara da Silva and declared both Nira and Ronialdo ineligible for eight years. The officials may appeal the ruling to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
