Rosario authorities halt illegal land extraction and landfill operations

The Municipality of Rosario has halted unauthorized soil movement and earth extraction activities on a private four-hectare property located in the western area of the city, near the border with Pérez. Authorities discovered that the site was being used for illegal land extraction, acting as an open-air landfill, and as a site for burning tires and extracting metals.

Environmental inspections revealed severe infractions, including excavations reaching depths of over five meters. These activities have reportedly affected underground aquifers, resulting in the accumulation of approximately 20,000 square meters of contaminated water. During the intervention, officials seized heavy machinery and two trucks, and closed a warehouse located on the premises. Additionally, a wild boar cub was rescued from the site.

An administrative investigation is underway to determine responsibilities and the extent of the environmental damage. The municipality may impose fines of up to 12 million pesos and will require the owners to implement environmental remediation measures, including filling the excavations to ensure the safety of the area.
